Why Windows PKI?
The basis of a Windows PKI is included within the Windows Server Edition. The Windows PKI was
introduced with Windows NT 4.0. Since Windows Server 2003, the Windows PKI is a powerful software
component, suitable to design an enterprise PKI.
What does the Windows PKI offer?
The Windows PKI supports common PKI standards like X.509, PKIX and PKCS. The Windows PKI can be
used to design several CA hierarchies and be deployed as a root CA, intermediate CA or issuing CA.
Furthermore, the Windows PKI can be configured as a standalone CA without Active Directory (AD)
integration or as an enterprise CA with full AD integration.
