This seminar teaches the technical foundations, possible fields of application as well as organizational aspects of public key infrastructures (PKI).

The mechanisms and components of a PKI and typical applications will be presented that use digital certificates for encryption, digital signatures or strong authentication. The legal and organisational aspects will be explained as well as possible implementation alternatives. Here, the pros and cons for implementing an internal PKI or usage of an external service provider are compared and you will learn about the value add of smart cards. An evaluation of cost and benefits serves as a guideline for planning a PKI project.
