A Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) provides keys, certificates and further services to make an efficient and reliable security management possible. With digital IDs (certificates) a large number of applications can be protected high level.

Only with a PKI, the use of digital signatures is possible. With these, the integrity and authenticity of digital documents may be proven unambiguously and the signers of a document are traceable.

A high number of enterprise PKIs and public trustcenters have been established in the recent past. Further organisations will follow and one task is it to establish such infrastructures in a reliable manner, to extend them and to connect them.
